Yellow gold brooch centered with a South African coin from 1897 and supported by an intersecting shovel and pickaxe.  Certainly a memory of a miner who made his fortune in South Africa.   We have seen watch chains made of nuggets, cufflinks and seals carved from gold-bearing quartz.
